1. Overview
A concise overview of the test
There are two main versions of the IELTS test:
1. IELTS Academic: This version is primarily for those applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or for professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
2. IELTS General Training: This version is more suitable for individuals seeking work experience, training programs, or migration to English-speaking countries.
The test evaluates four language skills:
Listening: Assessing your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.
Reading: Evaluating your comprehension abilities through a range of written materials.
Writing: Testing your ability to present and organize information coherently and appropriately.
Speaking: Assessing your spoken English skills through face-to-face interviews.
IELTS scores range from 0 to 9 for each section, with an overall band score calculated as an average of the four individual scores. Different institutions and organizations have different score requirements, so it's essential to check the specific requirements of the place you're applying to.
Test-takers receive a Test Report Form showing their band scores for each section and an overall band score. Scores are valid for two years.
Overall, IELTS is widely accepted by universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies in English-speaking countries, making it an essential test for many individuals aiming to work, study, or live abroad.
