2. Writing
An overview of task 1 and 2 with tips and language advice.
Task 1: For the Academic module, test-takers are required to describe visual information presented in a graph, chart, table, or diagram. This task aims to evaluate your ability to present and compare data, describe trends, and highlight significant features. In the General Training module, Task 1 involves writing a letter based on a given situation, which could be formal, semi-formal, or personal.
Task 2: In both the Academic and General Training modules, Task 2 involves writing an essay in response to a prompt or question. This task evaluates your ability to present and justify an opinion, argue a point, or discuss a topic at length.
Key points to consider for the IELTS Writing test:
Time Management: You have 60 minutes to complete both tasks. Task 1 should be completed in about 20 minutes, while Task 2 should take around 40 minutes. It's crucial to manage your time effectively to complete both tasks within the allotted time.
Band descriptors:
Task achievement (task 1): Carefully read and understand the given visual data (graphs, charts, tables, diagrams) in the Academic module or the situation for letter writing in the General Training module. Ensure you comprehend the main trends, comparisons, or the purpose of the letter.
Task Response (task 2): Address the task requirements fully. Make sure you understand the question or prompt and respond appropriately, providing relevant information and staying on topic.
Coherence and Cohesion: Organize your ideas logically and coherently. Use cohesive devices (transition words, linking phrases) to connect sentences and paragraphs for a smooth flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Show a range of vocabulary, using words and phrases accurately and appropriately. Avoid repetition and demonstrate a good command of vocabulary.
Grammar and Accuracy: Aim for grammatical accuracy and proper sentence structure. Use a variety of sentence structures and demonstrate control over grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Word Count: Task 1 and Task 2 have recommended word counts (150 and 250 words, respectively, for the Academic module). You should write above these limits to assure a good score. For task 1, you need to be careful not to write too much as it is supposed to be a summary. I recommend not writing more than 200 words. For task 2, there is no limit, but the more you write, the more mistakes you are likely to make. I recommend for higher scores to write between 300 - 350 words to have a developed response.
Preparation for the IELTS Writing test involves practicing different types of essays and letter writing, improving your vocabulary and grammar skills, and familiarizing yourself with various question types to ensure you're ready for the exam.
