It is important for people to take risks, both in their professional lives and their personal lives.
Do you think the advantages of taking risks outweigh the disadvantages?
It is argued that individuals should be taking risks in all aspects of their life, especially for their work and at home. While certain detrimental effects can occur from the taking of risks, never taking any would be the biggest detriment to a person's development, which will be proven throughout the following paragraphs.
There are clear benefits gained by taking risks, and if none were taken, a person could see very little improvement in their lives. Starting with some personal aspects, one clear risk is pursuing someone that they are attracted to. Quite often, due to fear of rejection, nervousness or being too shy, people do not try to have a relationship with someone they feel connected to. While they certainly could get rejected, at least then they would have closure and can move on rather than always imagining what could have been. With regards to career prospects, it is hard to get noticed if the worker is always playing it safe. Putting themselves forward and stepping up to challenges are better ways to draw attention to their abilities, impressing those who employ them, and hopefully leading to promotions.
However, there are some concerning factors which need to be considered when taking risks. Before taking a risk, the person needs to clearly consider whether the possible rewards merit the costs that could occur. Some employees are experts in their fields and after working for companies for an extended period of time may consider going into business by themselves. Although they have the skills to carry out the work, they may not possess the business acumen for the other aspects needed. They could provide a fantastic service or product but still fail. When considering a person’s free time, they may get drawn to activities which are exciting due to the danger involved. Extreme sports, for example, have become increasingly popular, and even though the safety measures in place are considerable, accidents and deaths do occur, leaving family members suffering from paying high medical bills or the loss of a loved one.
In conclusion, there are particular drawbacks relating to taking risks, but it is clear that the greatest risk would be to never take a risk. A life without risk would be boring.
