How important is grammar in IELTS?

Grammatical range and accuracy is an aspect you get assessed on in both writing and speaking. It is worth a quarter of your writing and speaking scores.

How accurate does my grammar need to be?

It depends on the score you want to get. Any score which is 7 or higher should have very high accuracy of grammar. For a 6, you can make more mistakes so long as it does not affect communication.

How important is the range?

The range is just as important as the accuracy. You need to use a variety of structures. For scores 6 and above, complex structures are important.

What are complex structures?

​

Complex structures are sentences with more than one clause in the sentence. Common ones that are used in speaking and writing are the cause and effect structures, conditionals, and relative clauses.
